Satellite Office
An office used by company employees to telecomute allowing them to reduce commuting time.
SBS
Sick Building Syndrome. Condition in which 20 percent of building occupants exhibit symptoms that go away when they leave the building.
Sealants
Finishing topcoat applied to an object by spray or wipe.
Seat Suspensions
A system that supports the upper part of the seat assembly.
Sheen Level
The degree of luster or gloss used on wood topcoat finish materials.
Single-Source Procurement
A complete purchase award to a single vendor.
Site Audit
Thorough inspection of a buildings interior use of space and infrastructure that shows asset positions, management and investment costs associated with strategic facility planning.
SKU
Stock Keeping Unit, i.e. a part #.
Sled Base
A tubular design approach to a chair's base structure offered in either an arm/leg loop or platform rocker version.
Slipmatched Veneer
The laying out of veneer sheets by sliding each successive one accross the next resulting in a rpetitive grain pattern across a panel.
Solid Woods
Wood panel or edge piece having minimal 5mm thickness.
Solution-Dyed
(Textiles) The dyeing process where the dye is added in a liquid state prior to yarn being extruded.
Species
A distinct kind of wood, such as maple, oak, walnut, cherry, etc.
Spec List
Technical information and/or part numbers of fabrics or furniture items.
Spin Lift
Mechanical height adjustment operated by spinning a chair counter-clockwise to raise and clockwise to lower.
Square Footage
Length times the width of a room, space, floorplate or fabric product
Stained Wood
Wood with the natural color modified to some degree - to make it more even and to imitate other wood essences.
STC
Sound Transmission Coefficient used to measure the absorption and feflective qualities of a hard surface.
Strategic Facility Plan
(SFP) An active framework that projects companies' real estate departments plan for five to ten years
Suspended Pedestals
Pedestals that are hung from a worksurface and only extend three-quarter depth do the floor.
Suspension
The system that is used to support the drawer and facilitate its movement in and out of the pedestal, normally 3/5 and full suspensions.
Swatch
A fabric sample used for determining finish and color compatabilities.
Swivel-Tilt
A mechanism allowing chairs to rotate, swivel side-to-side and tilt back.
Task Chair
A chair designed to support individuals who perform task-intensive functions, set on a 5-prong centered base.
Teflon
Brand name of the topical fabric treatments to help repel stains and liquid
Telecommuting
Work program that allows employees to work from off-site locations.
Tendonitis
Tendon inflammation occuring when a muscle or tendon is repeatedly tensed from overuse or unaccustomed use of the wrist and shoulder.
Tilt/Tension Control
Regulates how easily chair tilts based on a user's body weight.
Tombstone
An electrical floor monument that protrudes above floor level and must be addressed in product placement.
Tonge & Groove
A joint made by a tounge on one end of a board fitting into a corresponding groove on another edge
Traditional Design
Aesthetic attributes of products reflectiong Early American periods, styles and/or eras - Pioneer, Elizabethan, Queen Anne, Palladian, Federal and Neogothic.
Transistional Design
A blended look of traditional and contemporary design.
User
Generic term for occupants of a space, (i.e. an individual, company or department). Spaces can have more than one user for each tier of definition.
U-Shape
Assembled desk, return and credenza storage that forms a U layout .
UV Finish
A color or wood finish that is light baked onto a surface rather than rubbed on and absorbed into wood.
Vacancy Rate
The square footage percentage in a facility unoccupied or not leased.
Value Engineering
Review of methods and/or materials being considered with the intent ofreducing costs, imporoving performance, reliability, maintainablility, aesthetic, safety and security criteria.
Vein Line
A design element, often called a "reveal," which produces a visual demarcation of the individual pieces of the desk.
Veneer
Thin sheet of wood, sliced or sawn from a log, bolt or flitch that is normally bonded to a panel's interior substrate.
Veneer Flip
The tonal differences in color due to differing light reflections that occur when two wood surfaces adjoin at a right angle.
Veneer Furniture
Furniture made using thin sheets of wood glued onto a substrate that produces "show wood" quality product.
Veneer Reconstituted (Re-Cuts)
Thin layers of wood glued together as a block, cut sideways and stained to imitate real wood. Offers particularly stable appearance and pattern consistency.
Vertical slotted channels
Virgin Foam
100% polyurethane foam, having no clay fillers. The absence of clay fillers allows for top performance resiliency over long-term use.
Virtual Office
Employees having the freedom to set-up an office anywhere (home, hotel or car) through electronic contract.
VOC's
Volatile Organic Compounds that can affect indoor air quality, (i.e. paints, cleaning solutions, pesticides).
Waterfall Design
A softened, downward shape of a seat-front behind the back of the user's legs that prevents nerve presure, thereby increasing circulation.
Whitewood
Unfinished wood state.
Wire Through
The channels used below the surface to manage cables efficiently.
Wood-Grain Furniture
(Faux Wood) Exterior portions of furniture creating the impression of natural wood essence.
Workplace Standards
Guidelines used to allocate workspace or workstation design on a corporate-wide basis according to a defined set of criteria.
Workstation
A space where work is accomplished ( inner office, open office area).
Zone Cabling
Electrical distribution management from a central command box within an open plan area rather than from a typical electrical closet on each floor.
